Advice and Information
on Terrorism

Sussex is a safe place to live and work - we want to keep it that way. The security and wellbeing of our communities is a priority for Sussex Police.
Secure in the Knowledge
'Secure in the
Knowledge' is a booklet available to businesses across the country which
highlights the vital role they can play in defeating terrorism.
The threat of unsecured fertiliser
A prime example of a group of people whose vigilance and care can help
protect communities from the threat of terrorism is anyone who
handles or stores fertiliser. Many of the most notorious terrorist attacks
of the last 15 years, from Oklahoma City to Omagh, were carried out using fertiliser-based
explosive devices – so it’s vital that fertiliser does not fall
in to the wrong hands.
Even in relatively small quantities, fertiliser-based explosives
can cause a great deal of destruction. Therefore, if you are someone who handles
fertiliser in any capacity, you need to make sure it’s secure. Full details
on how to go about doing this are contained on the government’s Secure
Your Fertiliser website.
Counter Terrorist Security Adviser (CTSA)
Sussex Police, together with police forces throughout the United Kingdom,
is better trained and equipped than ever to combat the threat of International
and Domestic Terrorism. The force, as part of the ongoing counter terrorism strategy, has dedicated Counter Terrorist Security Advisers (CTSA’s)
who are coordinated, trained and tasked by the National Counter Terrorism
Security Office (NaCTSO), a specialist police organisation co-located with
the Security Service in the National Security Advice Centre (NSAC).
The primary role of these advisers is to provide protective and counter terrorism security advice to support businesses. The advice available takes into account both conventional and non-conventional terrorist techniques and the aim is to reduce vulnerability to terrorist threats. The CTSA’s work closely with other Police Forces throughout the Country, Government Departments and other agencies.
For non-urgent crime prevention advice, businesses can contact their local Police Crime Reduction Officer, but if you feel your company could benefit from Counter Terrorism security advice, you can write to the following address:

Malling House
Church Lane

The CTSA’s would also like to remind you that if you consider anything to be suspicious or connected with terrorism to contact Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999 or the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321. If it is an emergency remember to dial 999.
The threat to the UK from terrorism is one constantly monitored by Sussex Police
and other agencies. This allows us to regularly assess security measures in place
and review the policing response to ensure we meet the threat appropriately.
Our message is for people to be alert but not alarmed.
We continue to urge the public and business communities to report anything
suspicious or unusual to police.
Contact Sussex Police through our non-emergency number 0845 60 70 999
or via our Contact Us page. In
an emergency, always dial 999.
Sussex Police need your help to protect our communities from terrorists and extremists.
We welcome your contact, information and support.
We say a big “Thank You” to those people who come
forward to report their concerns and suspicions. Your information will be followed
up and action will be taken whenever appropriate. Please do contact us –
even if it's just ‘a hunch’ – you may hold the missing jigsaw
piece in an ongoing investigation.
