Sussex Small Ports Unit
Maritime & Aviation
The
Small Ports Unit’s purpose is to protect the national security of the UK.
Its primary role is to support the National Ports Scheme and, by working
with other agencies, to provide a professional service in countering any threat
to Her Majesty’s Government’s interests in the UK and abroad.
The priority is to counter the threat to national security from terrorism,
espionage, sabotage and organised (major) crime.
Terrorism Act
The unit is responsible for all sea ports (including marinas) along the Sussex
coast. Shoreham Airport, Goodwood Aerodrome and numerous airstrips within the
county also fall within its remit.
Powers under the Terrorism Act 2000 and more general legislation are used by
the unit officers at all of these Sussex Ports.
Operators
and owners of aircraft and sea going vessels are asked to be vigilant with regard
to security issues and matters relating to smuggling (goods & human trafficking).
General Aviation Report
An integral part of the unit’s remit is dealing with aircraft flying
to and from the ‘Common Travel Area’ of Great Britain and Northern
Ireland and/or Eire, Isle of Man or the Channel Isles.
Aircraft flying to or arriving from other areas are also examined by our officers
where required.
The owner /operator of an aircraft flying to and from a location within the common travel area must give notice to the police of the flight. Notification needs to be made a minimum of 12 hours prior to the flight. In sussex this requirement can be satisfied by the completion of a General Aviation Report which can then be faxed (or emailed). (See foot of GA report for full details)
