Local priorities

Speeding and Road Safety

We are aware that speeding and road safety issues around local schools, in our towns and rural wards, is perceived to be an on going issue.

Issue raised on 11 Sep 2014

There is always work ongoing to ascertain the level of these issues in each area with many different Police departments including Neighbourhood Policing and Road policing teams carrying out specific tasks.
Sussex Police are encouraging the formation of Speed watch groups in areas where speeding specifically is perceived to be an issue, this has happened with much success over the past few years.
We are also working with partners from the Safer Roads Partnership, the Casualty reduction unit of The road policing unit and with local communities.

September 8th saw the launch of a Europe wide seatbelt enforcement week.
As part of this initiative our teams of Road policing officers have been carrying out spot checks in and around the Lewes District.
It is surprising how many people still take risks with their own safety and that of others by flouting the seatbelt laws. Failure to wear a correctly fitted seatbelt is a criminal offence which carries 3 penalty points and 100 Fine.
On the launch day 12 Penalty notices were issued in 2.5 hours in Lewes Town.
For more information on the incentive, please see the tispol website https://www.tispol.org/news/articles/europe-wide-seatbelt-enforcement-operation-begins-monday-8-september
