The detective leading the investigation into the discovery of a badly burnt corpse on Dyke Golf Course, near Brighton, has revealed that the body had been mutilated.

DCI Trevor Bowles from Sussex Police Major Crime Branch said: "The body has been badly burnt and at this stage we are unable to confirm the gender or estimate the age. However, it is clear that at least one foot is missing below the shin. We will try to determine at post mortem whether this was before or after death occurred, but the body will remain in situ for the immediate future while our investigations at the scene continue."

Police were called to the golf club in Devil's Dyke Road by golfers playing on the course just before noon on Saturday morning (September 4). They discovered the body between the 17th and 18th holes.

DCI Bowles continued: "Detectives and scenes of crime officers are currently at the scene. We are searching the nearby area for evidence and have spoken to the golfers who found the body and people working at the course.

"We are at a very early stage of the investigation and I would ask anyone who may be able to help us piece together a picture of what has happened to get in touch."

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is asked to call Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999 quoting Operation Trewin or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
