Halloween is coming and so is Operation Respect!
Halloween is coming and so is Operation Respect!
19 October 2010
Halloween and bonfire night will soon be upon us and Sussex Police would like to remind the local community, particularly young children to keep safe and celebrate in a considerate manner.
'Operation Respect' is a partnership operation ensuring Halloween and Bonfire night celebrations do not lead to an increase in noise nuisance and vandalism. Extra resources are being provided to patrol Mid Sussex on foot and respond to calls, in order to prevent rowdy behaviour which can cause distress and alarm to some residents.
Chief Inspector Ed De-la-rue said: "We want the local community to enjoy all that is on offer around this time of year. However, I would urge parents to make a point of knowing where their children are and what they are doing during the Autumn half term break.
"We are working closely with other agencies, including Mid Sussex District and the Town Councils, Fire & Rescue Service, County Council and Youth Services, to make this time of year as safe and enjoyable as possible for everybody.
"Many of the calls we get are about children and young people. Sometimes what they intend just as fun can be distressing to others, or even endanger people or damage property. We hope that with a little guidance, children and young people can continue to have fun safely and responsibly, in a friendly environment.
"Families, schools and youth groups can help by talking to children in advance and advising them about being responsible in their behaviour.
"We are asking those who are going out trick or treating to take care and not to call on the elderly and those who may be afraid, or where a "Sorry No Trick Or Treat" leaflet is displayed.
"Residents can be assured we will provide extra police resources in our communities throughout this busy period and we will be checking that the regulations concerning the sale of alcohol and fireworks are being adhered to."
With bonfire night following soon after Halloween, Chief De La Rue has offered the following reminders:
It is an offence for anyone under the age of 18 to possess a
firework in a public place.
It is an offence to use a firework between 11pm and 7am. From
midnight on November 5.
It is an offence to supply fireworks to those under 18.
It is an offence to throw a firework into any highway, street,
thoroughfare or public place.
