Operation Airwalk underway in Hove
30 January 2012
Thirty-eight drivers have been stopped
for using a mobile phone whilst driving or not wearing
a seatbelt in a road safety awareness campaign in Hove.
Officers from the roads policing unit, Hove neighbourhood
policing teams, Brighton and Hove City
Council, and East Sussex fire and rescue service
took part in the initiative, named Operation Airwalk.
This took place for two hours on the
Old Shoreham Road near the fire station in English Close
on Thursday 12 January, during which four tickets were issued to
drivers.
Sergeant Chris Durrant from the neighbourhood policing team
said: "The operation is aimed at educating drivers using mobile
phones and both drivers and passengers found not wearing seat
belts. Each offender is given the option of an on-the-spot fixed
penalty notice or to take time out to view a fire service
presentation demonstrating the potential consequences of their
offences. Fire officers offer their own personal experiences to
highlight the dangers and reinforce the messages."
This joint operation will be conducted frequently on roads
within the Brighton and Hove area.
If you wish to report road related issues, Operation Crackdown
is a free on-line service where the public can identify dangerous
road users, report drivers for mobile phone use or no seat belt and
report offences such as untaxed and abandoned vehicles. All reports
submitted are processed by the road policing unit.
