Man injured in Brighton seafront fall
30 January 2012
A man is in a critical condition in hospital after he fell from
railings on Brighton seafront.
The 21-year old single man from Sidcup in Kent had been on a night
out in Brighton with friends on Saturday 28 January and
climbed over railings on the seafront in Kings Road opposite the
junction with West Street shortly before 11pm. A friend was
encouraging him to climb back to safety and two police constables
patrolling on the Lower Esplanade also saw him. One of them called
to him to go back, and the second officer went up stairs to the
upper level to join the man's friend. However as he arrived there
the man fell some 30 feet on to the Lower Esplanade.
He was given immediate medical assistance by police and paramedics
and was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital where he remains
in a critical condition with multiple fractures. His family are
aware and relatives have come to the hospital.
It is not clear exactly why he fell but the incident is not being
treated as suspicious
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) have been
informed as a matter of standard procedure because police officers
were present when he fell.
A Sussex Police spokesman said; "We would like to hear from anyone
else who was in that area late on Saturday night and who saw
anything of this incident or what led up to it. Please call us on
101 quoting serial 1734 of 28/1."
