Drivers Still Not Belting Up
A week long campaign has shown that thousands of drivers are still putting themselves, and their children, at risk by not using a seatbelt.
The safety campaign was organised by TISPOL, the European Traffic Police Network, during September. Over 96,000 car users in 19 countries were caught not wearing a seat belt, over 4000 of them being children.
The Sussex Police Road Policing Unit took part in the campaign, which resulted in 344 tickets being issued by officers to drivers and passengers - including twelve for children not being strapped in.
Inspector Mark Trimmer, Sussex Police Road Policing Unit, said:
"We must continue to get the message across that failing to wear a seatbelt is not only illegal but also adds a considerable risk to every journey that you make. Deaths are not only caused by the initial collision but passengers being thrown forward and colliding with other car occupants.
"Drivers are reminded it is their responsibility to ensure children under sixteen are wearing an appropriate car restraint and risk a penalty for failing to do this."
