General Information and Guidance

The Hastings Volunteer Cadet Corps (VCC) is one of six cadet units with Sussex Police. Cadets are aged between 14 to 18 years. They meet every Wednesday evening at the Police Station. Events and activities include:

  • Local event policing
  • Remembrance day parade
  • Crime Prevention activities
  • and lots more

Full uniform will be provided.

What sort of training will I get?
Once you have passed the recruitment process you will join the unit as a Recruit Cadet and undertake initial training every Wednesday evening to provide you with the basics such as the structure of Sussex Police, basic law, radio procedure etc. You will then take a knowledge check and upon completion join the unit as a Cadet. You will then be issued with your uniform and take part in the regular weekly cadet sessions. You will then also be eligible to take part in the planned community duties.

What sort of things will I do once I am in the unit?
Once in the unit you will have the opportunity to attend and patrol community events such as the Hastings Half Marathon. You will be taught Drill (marching) and attend the Remembrance Sunday parade. You will also attend the Annual Parade event which is held at headquarters. This event is attended by all the cadet units in Sussex as well as the Chief Constable and the Police & Crime Commissioner.

The unit also gets guest speakers in from various units within the Police such as SOCO, PCSOs, Dog Unit and Roads Policing amongst others. This will give you an invaluable insight into what life is like within the force.
You will also receive basic First Aid training.

How much does it cost?
A weekly subscription fee of £1.50 applies. All revenue is used for cadet purposes only.

Does being a cadet provide me with a direct pathway into the regular police force?
No. Whilst the skills you will learn as a cadet will provide you with some of the tools you need to be a regular officer, there is no continuity of service. You will have to undertake the same recruitment process as any other individual to become a Police Officer or Special Constable.

How do I Apply?
To apply, you must be between 14 and 18 years of age, and of previous good character.
To contact us or to receive an application form send an email to hastingsandrother.vcc@sussex.pnn.police.uk including the following details:

  • Full Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Full Address (including postcode)
  • Telephone number (Home land line as well as mobile if you have one)
  • State in a couple of sentences why you would like to join

We will reply in due course with a full recruitment pack which will include a more detailed application form.

Your application will be subject to successful completion of vetting by our Central Vetting Unit and an interview.

Good luck and we hope to meet you in the future!
