Male and female Police Officers Becoming a Police Officer

By choosing a career as a police officer you are embarking on a career that will offer many challenges along the way. It is rewarding and fulfilling and will help you develop as an individual.

It's a big step deciding to work for Sussex Police, which is why you will find all the information you need here to help you make the right decision.

Are you an existing Police Officer?
We currently have limited opportunities for experienced Police Officers including Detective Constables and officers with other specialist skills (Please bear in mind that all Sussex police officers are required to live within the county). If you'd like to transfer then complete the transferee initial contact sheet.» Further information on transferees and rejoiners
Due to a phenomenal response during our Police Officer recruitment drive in January 2009, we will be reviewing recruitment requirements in 2011.

Please continue to check the website periodically for any updates.

If you are interested in becoming a Police Constable with Sussex then you should first ensure that you meet the entry criteria set out below.

  • You will be at least 18 years old at the time of your application.
  • You are currently living in Sussex.
  • You have no cautions, convictions, bind-overs or fixed-penalty notices.
  • You have been living in the UK continuously for the last three years prior to this application. (see note below).
  • You will have a full UK manual driving license at the time of appointment. Please note you are not required to hold a driving license at the start of your application. Reasonable adjustments may be considered to those unable to drive due to medical reasons.
  • You do not have an application outstanding with another force.
  • If you have previously been rejected, at least six months will have passed prior to your re-application.
Please note that if you have worked/travelled abroad for longer than a total of 3 months within the last three years then we may be unable to progress your application (this is due to difficulties associated with securing vetting and security clearance from foreign governments). However, in certain circumstances we may be able to make an exception (for example if you have been working for the military, working abroad for a UK based company or if you have been on a University or college Gap Year for a maximum of 12 months immediately following your studies).

If you would like to clarify any of this points please call our recruitment team on 01273 404151 who will be on hand to advise you accordingly.
