District Commander's message: Chief Inspector Ian Pollard

For the police service we have a policing plan period that runs from the 1st April to end of March, and over that period I am responsible for certain crime targets and also crime reduction. This year 2011-2012, Adur and Worthing District has continued to reduce crime and as at the 31st March 2012, we reduced crime by 3% and were only one of two districts acrossWest Sussex to have achieved this.

Much credit must go to our Community Safety Partners who we work alongside with on a whole range of issues from anti-social behaviour through to our night-time economy venues in the towns, and to my Neighbourhood Policing Teams, my response officers and the detectives who investigate some of the series crime and the more serious offences.

Adur and Worthing continues to be a safe place for people to live, work and visit and some of our success around crime reduction has seen us achieving a big reduction in burglary of peoples' homes by some 88 offences when compared to last year. Theft of and theft from peoples' cars has also reduced when compared from last year by some 40 less offences. Violent crime has also seen massive reductions with 313 less victims of violent crime. This tells me that the work we do around our licensed premises with our street pastors and with our early intervention with young people that this really works and keeps people safe. Be assured that this work will continue as we enter our new Policing Plan period this year where we will continue to work with our partners in making you feel and keeping you safe.

My officers that police the area of Southwick were recognised in a National Home Office report released this month in the manner in which they tackled anti-social behaviour where three very elderly victims were targeted by a group of young people, ages ranging from 14-16. The efforts and measures that were put in place saw those responsible brought to justice and this multi-agency approach featured as a case study in the recent report. This report can be found here:   http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/publications/crime/asb-focus-on-the-victim?view=Binary

My Neighbourhood Policing Team are pro-active in seeking to address issues on their areas and recently they undertook some plain clothes activity in an area of Worthing where they identified a person known to them who was in possession of a pedal cycle. Because of the officers' local knowledge of crimes on their beats they recognised that this distinctive bicycle was similar to one stolen from a burglary two days previous. This person was arrested and a search of his address also recovered other property from that burglary. I am sure you will agree with me, that this is excellent police work and that you are reassured my officers are out patrolling where you live preventing crime and keeping you safe.

As we move into this year there will be some challenges we face with the forthcoming Olympics and this will place demands upon the police service nationally and locally however through our planning, the policing service that you receive will remain the same.

I hope to continue on the success that we have seen and look forward to the year ahead.
