District Commander's message: Chief Inspector Jane Derrick

We start the new policing year with a number of challenges on Arun, but we are clear as to what we must continue to do, where we need to improve and just how  important working in partnership is.

Over the past policing year we have seen an overall 8% increase in crime across the District, something that we are not at all proud of and are intent upon turning around. The majority of the crime increase is crime that is easy to commit and difficult to prevent and detect; crime such as breaking into cars, sheds, garages and shoplifting.

The majority of the crime increase occurred in the first few months of last year, over the past 3 months we have seen a 7% reduction. This is as a result of  the remodelling of the Neighbourhood Policing Teams, facilitating long term solutions with our partners and voluntary sector, making best use of the community intelligence and all Arun staff targeting those who commit crime, handle stolen goods or choose to sell or supply illegal drugs within the District.

In the background a number of investigations continue around a number of burglary series that have affected several districts and I hope to bring you an update on their successes later this month.

Over the next few weeks I will be meeting with staff to reinforce what our objectives are over the next 12 months. We will also be meeting with a number of stakeholders in early May to launch Operation Accent - looking to enhance our current relationships, improve the sharing of information and work together to target those who continue to commit crime and antisocial behaviour in Arun. This will include work with  national organisations such as the UKBA , the Salavation Army and Stop the Traffik.

Whilst we will use our police powers to target those who commit crime and antisocial behaviour we need to really make sure we provide the best service to everyone who makes contact with us . We are moving in the right direction, but there is always room for improvement. I have been contacting vicitms of crime in Arun to make sure we are doing all we can to support them and keep them informed. Overall the feedback is positive and people are surprised by my phone call. The bottom line is that it is important to me so I will keep a keen eye on the feedback we get and make sure we take notice of it.

I want to reinforce just how important every piece of information is to us. Please don't keep it to yourself, let us know. You can do this in a number of ways - speak to your local officer, call 999 in an emergency, 101 in a non-emergency or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
As ever if there is anything you want to discuss further please don't hesitate to contact me.
