District Commander's message: Chief Inspector Rachel Bacon
Thank you to everyone for the warm welcome I have received since I arrived at Chichester. I have been in post for three months now and having just reached the end of the police performance year I wanted to share with you what we have achieved.
Over the past year we have worked hard to tackle some of the problems which you told us worried you most and I would like to start by telling you about a couple of the successes that we have had.
You told us that you were worried about Anti Social Behaviour which included crimes such as criminal damage because this was affecting the quality of your day to day lives. We responded to this and implemented reduction plans working closely with other agencies such as Chichester District Council. I am pleased to say that together we have achieved a reduction in all anti social behaviour crime of 20% across Chichester District. Compared to the previous year there have been 240 less victims of anti social crime. We reduced the number of criminal damage crimes by 16 %. That meant 122 less people were the victim of this type of crime.
You also told us that you were worried about the anti-social behaviour of a small minority of street drinkers. We have worked intensively to resolve this issue. We have worked in partnership with other agencies to offer support and pathways out for the situation for a number of individuals. However for seven of those persons were unable to engage and make changes and therefore we have gather enough evidence to support enforcement action against them and this week they were removed permanently from the streets of Chichester.
I can also report that we have achieved another year of reduction in all crime continuing the downward trend that we have seen over the past few years. We have reduced total crime by -4.5% over the year compared to the previous year.
Looking forward to the coming year we do face some challenges which I am sure we can meet together. Despite a reduction in the overall crime level we have seen some increases in acquisitive crime. We can speculate that this is related to the current economic climate. Your local policing team, together with our partners, will be working hard to ensure that this increase does not continue. We will need your help in this. Much of the crime we are seeing relates to property being left insecure. We do live in a low crime area so I do not want you to live in fear however we need to make sure that the small minority do not have the opportunity to steal your hard earned possessions from you. The policing team will be out and about helping you to mark your property. Please make sure you join the community messaging system so that you hear about activity that is taking place in your local area which will include crime trends.
We are all committed to serving the community and I can assure you that Sussex Police have an exceptional team working to protect you. Each time I am asked how I find working in Chichester my answer is the same, it is the people here who make it such a fantastic place to be. Please feel free to contact myself or the neighbourhood teams to express your concerns or views.
