District Commander's message: Chief Inspector Jayne Dando

I am delighted to bring you more good news about the reduction in crime in the Town. We are currently showing a reduction of 735 victims of crime for the year compared to last year, that is such great news and I would like to thank all of you for contributing towards that. Our partners in the town within the Community Safety Partnership and our communities, for helping to achieve that. We have shown the biggest reduction in crime in the whole of Sussex.

Criminal damage and car crime are 2 areas where we have made a difference. You told us this time last year that they were crimes that mattered to you, and we have put in place a number of operations to tackle those in particular parts of the town. Both can have significant financial costs to victims, and there is nothing more annoying and upsetting than coming out to see that your car window has been smashed, or that your fence has been damaged. Car crime is down by 83 victims, which is 17% and criminal damage has reduced by a whopping 25% over 1000 victims.

I would urge you to continue reporting these crimes to us, as we are keen to have an accurate picture of where the crime is occurring, so we can stop it.

As you will have seen from National press, this year has seen many pressures on the Policing Service. From the London riots, to protest activity in response to austerity measures, and economic pressures on us all, these are times of change for the country. I value so much the support we were given by our communities in Eastbourne. We are in a very lucky position, in that crime continues to stay low, and we are bucking the trend across the country, our communities are strong and engaged with us, and we will continue to work hard to tackle crime further.

As a part of my Neighbourhood team, I have a team of dedicated officers who work to support all the local officers who manage geographic areas. They are able to carry out warrants and target those people we suspect of committing crimes, such as shoplifters, those committing Anti social behaviour, and many more. They have had some fantastic results this year, for example in the past month they have executed five misuse of drugs warrants across the town. All the warrants have been succesful, two canabis factories have been found and dismantled, six people have been arrested for drug related offences. We cannot continue with this work without the support from the local community. If you have any information or notice anything suspicious please contact Crime Stoppers.

The operations team have recently been working with trading standards to target doorstep traders. An example was an elderly lady who had been targeted by a "cleaning company ". They had charged her over £500 to clean her windows, and arranged to return later n the day to collect the money. Fortunately the ladies carer alerted the police, the operations team together with trading standards were at the house when the men returned to collect the money. The activities of the company are now being investigated by trading standards.

You may recall that I have been talking in the press about an increase in burglary offences of peoples homes, we have had some significant successes in arresting culprits and detaining them in prison. I would ask that you all remain vigilant, and keep doors and windows secure during the warmer weather. We are about to launch Op Sunshine, our seasonal operation to bring to the forefront of peoples minds the security of their homes and valuables. Keep a look out for some exciting advertising we will be using in the town.
