Local priorities

Priority 1 - What you said: To improve the Valley area, focusing on improvement of alleyways, and painting of railings and steps. Raised at the Neighbourhood Panel meeting held on 09/02/2012 What we did: The local Neighbourhood Team will look into using the Community Payback Scheme to clean up the alleyways and repair broken steps and walkways. The local council were going to look into putting certain alleyways onto a street cleaning rota. Detailed street maps of the Valley were given out to Panel Members by Councillor Saunders, to allow residents to highlight areas of the Valley where work is needed to repair pavements.
Issue raised on 9 May 2012

What happened: A bid was secured for Community Payback who commenced work in October, and spent 2 weeks clearing the long alleyway that runs between Lewes Road and Elphick Road, then another week litter picking and weeding on the Valley estate. The team then returned for a further week in January, and 3 weeks in February where they painted railings and litter picked amongst other things. Volunteers from around the local area will get together and paint the remaining railings once paint and tools have been secured from the local council. One of the main alleyways in the Valley has recently been cleaned, and has also been put on a once a month rota for the street cleaners. It was mentioned that the alleyway hasn’t been cleaned for a few months so this has been brought up again at the Panel. Councillor Carr will invite Andy Bryce along to the next panel meeting to discuss this issue. Highways are going to be starting work next month on repairing pavements in Metcalfe Avenue and Valley Close. Community Payback have been secured in the Valley for a further 7 weeks next spring, provided funding is found for paint and paint brushes to enable them to continue work on the alleyways and railings. This is an ongoing priority and will be reviewed at the next meeting on the 10th May 2012.
Action taken on 10 May 2012

Priority 2 - What you said: To improve parking problems around Meeching Valley School during school drop off and pick up times. What we did: This is a new priory that was raised at the panel meeting on 9th Feb 2012. PCSO McColl and Councillor Carr will liase with Meeching Valley School re the parking problems and try to secure a time plate from the council for the ‘keep clear’ zig zag lines so they can be enforced by Lewes District Parking Shop if need be. Patrols will be carried out around the school during drop off and pick up times and advice given to drivers causing obstrctions.
Issue raised on 9 May 2012

What happened: This is a new priority and regular updates will be provided when action is taken.
Action taken on 10 May 2012

Priority 3 - What you said: To increase the number of litter bins between the Valley and Newhaven High street. Raised at the Neighbourhood Panel Meeting held on 9th Feb 2012. What we did: It was raised that there was only one litter bin between Newhaven High Street and the Valley. Panel members are now liaising with the local council to increase the amount of bins in the Valley area in order to improve the amount of litter.
Issue raised on 9 May 2012

What happened: Councillor Saunders email address has been given out and Panel members have been advised to email locations around the Valley that would benefit a new litter bin. Action taken on 9th Feb 2012
Action taken on 10 May 2012

Crime Mapper

Go to Crime mapper site

Crime mapping is part of a national initiative to enable members of the public to be apprised of crime levels in their area. The Sussex Police system provides crime levels at three levels: Force-wide, Districts, Wards/beats

How to read crime mapping data

For some smaller areas, the crime rates may appear high. This is primarily due to the low resident population within these areas; crime rates are calculated by dividing the actual number of crimes by the resident population and then multiplying by 1,000. Crime levels are then calculated using standard deviation, a way of fairly measuring and comparing the spread of crime across the force from area to area.
