District Commander's message: Chief Inspector Jon Hull
My last update was back in January just as my first week drew to a close. Perhaps the time in between that update and this one shows you just how busy I have been working for the communities within Mid Sussex! In my first few weeks I have met so many people who are committed to providing an even safer place to live than Mid Sussex already is. This year crime has increased slightly within the district but I would like to reassure you all that comparatively speaking Mid Sussex is still one of the safest places to live in the country when compared to other similar areas across England and Wales.
So as spring really gets going we will start to dust off the lawn mower (if you haven't already) and other gardening equipment. We have seen an increase in the theft of this sort of equipment so be sure to lock it away securely. Here's a link to more information - http://www.sussex.police.uk/advice-and-support/crime-prevention/. If you would like more advice on crime prevention in person then contact Alan Haffenden on 01243 520287 or Neville Wren on 101 extension 30301.
As the days get longer, we will also see an increase in the number of visitors to our district. Almost all of these guests are more than welcome in our many tourist attractions, beautiful villages and towns. There will, however, be a very small minority that will be coming to the area to commit crime. Just recently we dealt with a burglary at the Jewellers in Haywards Heath. We apprehended the suspects a short while later who did not live on our district. We have also recently dealt with suspects for breaking into property holding gardening equipment, also not from our district.
Why do I say this, well I want to reinforce just how important every piece of information is to us, if you see something suspicious please don't keep it to yourself, let us know - you won't be bothering us even if it turns out not to be sinister! You can do this in a number of ways - speak to your local officer, call 999 in an emergency, 101 in a non-emergency or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. You can also get involved with our active Neighbourhood Watch scheme, email the Mid Sussex district co-ordinator Mr Geoffrey Coe at gico@waitrose.com or the Sussex Neighbourhood Watch Federation Mr John Wright at john.w.wright@btinternet.com.
Finally I'd like to highlight the work of Redeeming Our Communities (ROC). On Friday 17th February, along with around 600 others, I attended the launch of ROC at Burgess Hill and I felt proud to be serving a community that is committed to helping others. ROC has great plans and needs as many people as possible to get involved - find out more on Sergeant Peter Allan's blog here: http://www.sussex.police.uk/about-us/sussex-police-people/peter-allan/
