District Commander's message: Chief Inspector Trevor Botting

Dear All,

I am pleased to report that the policing across Rother District continues to reduce crime compared to the same time last year. This is a fine achievement and bucks national trends. This has been achieved with hard work and a commitment by my team to target those persons committing crime. We are not complacent and will work hard for you as Christmas approaches to ensure that you all can enjoy a safe and enjoyable festive holiday. We also need you help; keep you home and vehicle safer by keeping them secure and don't leave valuable items on show. Please consider using timers in your home or leave lights on during the darker evenings. Also, please report any suspicious behaviour to us at the time that that we can respond to it. Call the new Sussex non emergency number of 101 and together we can reduce crime and lock up those committing it.

As part of the work to cut crime and catch criminals. in the first week of December the Rother District Neighbourhood Policing Team carried out 3 days of high visibility pro active policing on the main road networks entering the district under the title of Operation Galvanize. The operation was aimed at targeting travelling criminals who come onto Rother in order to commit a number of different crimes ranging from Burglaries to the ever increasing offence of metal theft. In order to address the increasing threat from Metal theft Police were targeting vehicles carrying scrap metal as well as any other waste material.

My team were supported in this operation by the Force Road policing Operations team, Vehicle Inspectorate, Department for Works and Pensions and enforcement officers from both Rother District Council and Hastings Borough Council to deal with unregistered Waste carriers.

This operation has shown the effectiveness of multi agency working, and our intention will be to conduct more of this style of operation. Now the plan is in place this can be taken anywhere and used effectively to target those people who use the road network to commit crime.

I am also very please to see that the surveys that we carry out regarding the service we provide to victims of crime are showing some great results. This is really important and my team remain very focused on providing the best service possible to all of the community that need our help. As always, if you have any feedback regarding the service you have provided please let us know.

It is with some sadness that this will be my last message to you as I am leaving my post on Rother to take up a new job as Head of Crime and Operations for East Sussex Division. I am very pleased to be continuing working in East Sussex, making a difference to the communities across the area.

My successor will be Chief Inspector Katy Woolford who comes to Rother from the Neighbourhood Policing Team from Lewes. Chief Inspector Woolford starts as District Commander on the 2nd January 2012 and will, no doubt, be keen to meet people across the District.

I am very grateful for the support that I have received from our partners, volunteers and the community during my time as District Commander and send my best wishes to you all. However you celebrate the festive period I wish you all a very peaceful and enjoyable holiday. Please spare a thought for all those that will be working over the holiday to keep you safe; my team, other emergency services and all of those who care for others within the community.

Take care and best regards,

Chief Inspector Trevor Botting
