Operation Columbus ![]() The towns & cities in Sussex are major tourist destinations and with the 120 mile coastline, proximity to mainland Europe and the high number of quality language schools its not surprising to find that it is host to many thousands of international language visits each year. COLUMBUS is a project created by Sussex Police designed to
ensure the safety and well being of international language students during their
visits. The project represents a partnership between police, language schools,
student bodies and local authorities which seeks to apply the best practice from
lessons learned through years of practical application.
It is also recognised that students themselves can either intentionally or unwittingly create problems themselves. In some cases this can be due to not understanding local customs or laws. To help overcome this problem a range of colour posters (as illustrated), featuring the cartoon character 'Columbus' aim to advise students on 'do's' and 'dont's' in England COLUMBUS has become so successful that it has been adopted in a number of other Counties in England and each year those involved in its operation share information on how to further improve the safety and well being of student visitors. With this purpose in mind students are invited to contribute their own ideas or feedback on their visit using the reply form. Unfortunately through reasons of volume we cannot reply to each contributor but still value your response. |
