Sussex Police has sworn in a record number of new officers into the force at the first attestation ceremony of 2023.
94 people were attested at the ceremony at East Sussex National Hotel on Wednesday, January 11.
The new recruits proclaimed their oath to King Charles III infront of distinguished guests which included Chief Constable Jo Shiner and Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne.
Of the 94 people joining the force, 73 of those will be training to be police constables while the remaining 21 will be training to become detective constables.
Sussex Police Chief Constable Jo Shiner said: “This is a really encouraging start to the new year to welcome a record number of people into the force. It was brilliant to see people who bring varying amounts of life experience and knowledge. There is no career quite like this where every day you can make a difference to your community. Our application window for new recruits is open and I would urge anyone who wants to apply to do so.”
Lohmann Garrard
"I wanted to join Sussex Police to help vulnerable people and to do my bit to make the communities of Sussex safer. I also wanted a career change, being a self-employed electrician it's a massive change for me but one that I am so excited to do. I did serve as a special constable for six-months, but even in that short amount of time I had a great insight into this new role. It was an amazing opportunity to see how everything operates. I loved every second of it!"
Rachel Willis
"I love learning and facing new challenges even at 51 (ssshhh!). I am a real people person so would be well suited to being in the hussle and bustle of a job. My main motivation for joining is to push myself and progress to be the best version of myself and prove that anything is possible and to never doubt your own abilities. I would love to become a family liaison officer, where I believe my past employment as a carer will hold me in good stead for this."
Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne said: “As always, I was delighted to attend the attestation ceremony this week. It was the biggest Sussex Police has had, with 94 new officers sworn in in front of their family and friends.
“This is such a proud moment for our new officers as they take on a challenging yet rewarding role - tackling crime, keeping our streets safe and making a genuine difference for people who live and work in and visit Sussex.”
As the Chief Constable said, the latest recruitment window for people who want to become the latest people to join Sussex Police.
