Two-year ban for drink-driver who crashed into Billingshurst children’s nursery

A drink-driver who crashed into a children’s nursery in Billingshurst has been disqualified.

At about 2am on Sunday 18 June, police were called to the incident at the junctions of Lower Station Road and Natts Lane.

On arrival, they discovered a BMW 430d had collided with the nursery, both of which were significantly damaged.

The vehicle had demolished a fingerpost, and gone through metal railings and a wooden picket fence, before coming to rest against the building (pictured).

Officers identified the driver at the scene as being Craig Grantham, 29, a clerk, of Longhurst Avenue, Horsham.

 

He was arrested and charged with driving with 113mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system.

At Worthing Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (4 July), he was disqualified from driving for 24 months. He was also ordered to pay a £585 fine, £85 costs and a £58 victim surcharge.

Grantham is among the first 39 motorists to be convicted as part of Surrey and Sussex Police’s summer crackdown on drink and drug-drivers.

  • In a separate incident, police pulled over a BMW 3 Series GT seen driving erratically at about 25mph on the A23 at Albourne.

Andrew Dixon was stopped by police due to the manner of his driving on the northbound carriageway at about 10.45pm on 2 June.

The 44-year-old architect, of Chislehurst in Bromley, Kent, was arrested and taken into custody, where he refused to provide an evidential breath sample as required by police.

He was subsequently charged with failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis and driving with no licence.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 22 June, Dixon was sentenced to 12 weeks in jail, suspended for 12 months. He was also disqualified from driving for 30 months, ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work, and pay £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

  • Jack Thomson, 18, a mechanic, of Rowlands Castle, Hampshire, was arrested in Rowlands Castle, Hampshire, on 1 June and charged with driving with 68mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system.

At Worthing Magistrates’ Court on 20 June, he was disqualified from driving for 17 months. He was also ordered to pay a £110 fine, £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

  • Peter De Norville, 46, unemployed, of St Johns Road, Crowborough, was arrested in London Road, Crowborough, on 2 June and charged with driving with 80mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 22 June, he was disqualified from driving for 17 months. He was also ordered to pay a £810 fine, £85 costs and a £81 victim surcharge.

  • Andrew Wynn, 44, unemployed, of Hastings Avenue, Seaford, was arrested in Alfriston Road, Seaford, on 2 June, and charged with driving with 90mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system, driving with no insurance and driving without a valid test certificate.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 24 June, he was disqualified from driving for 24 months. He was also ordered to pay a £600 fine, £85 costs and a £40 victim surcharge.

  • Claire Simmons, 44, unemployed, of Sunninghill Avenue, Hove, was arrested in Sunninghill Avenue, Hove, on 2 June and charged with driving with 75mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in her system.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 22 June, she was disqualified from driving for 17 months. She was also ordered to pay a £120 fine, £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

  • Dara Honar, 33, a telecommunications engineer, of Hurst Hill, Brighton, was arrested in London Road, Brighton, on 2 June and charged with driving with 44mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 22 June, he was disqualified from driving for 36 months. He was also ordered to pay a £510 fine, £85 costs and a £51 victim surcharge.

  • Lisa Kingsford, 38, a teacher, of Trubwick Avenue, Haywards Heath, was arrested on the A23 at Gatwick on 2 June and charged with driving with 97mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in her system.

At Crawley Magistrates’ Court on 19 June, she was disqualified from driving for 24 months. She was also ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work, and pay £85 costs and a £85 victim surcharge.

  • Justin Welsh, 38, unemployed, of North Parade, Horsham, was arrested in Guildford Road, Horsham, on 2 June and charged with driving with 48mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system.

At Crawley Magistrates’ Court on 19 June, he was disqualified from driving for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay a £576 fine, £85 costs and a £57 victim surcharge.

  • Sian McKay, 29, a solicitor, of Magellan Way, Eastbourne, was arrested in Magellan Way, Eastbourne, on 3 June and charged with driving with 118mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in her system.

At Hastings Magistrates’ Court on 21 June, she was disqualified from driving for 24 months. She was also ordered to pay a £400 fine, £85 costs and a £40 victim surcharge.

  • Adam Smith, 28, a doctor, of Bishopdown, Salisbury, Wiltshire, was arrested on the A27 at Chichester on 3 June and charged with driving with 73mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system.

At Worthing Magistrates’ Court on 4 July, he was disqualified from driving for 17 months. He was also ordered to pay a £530 fine, £85 costs and a £53 victim surcharge.

  • Peter Blackwood, 46, a technician, of Chippers Close, Worthing, was arrested in Palatine Road, Goring, on 3 June and charged with driving with 44mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system.

At Worthing Magistrates’ Court on 20 June, he was disqualified from driving for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay a £73 fine, £60 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

  • Mitchell Rodgers, 69, a patrolman, of The Green, Bognor Regis, was arrested in The Causeway, Bognor Regis, on 3 June, and charged with driving with 57mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system and driving with no licence.

At Worthing Magistrates’ Court on 20 June, he was disqualified from driving for 16 months. He was also ordered to pay a £507 fine, £85 costs and a £50 victim surcharge.

  • Robert Scott-Ragless, 18, unemployed, of Newtown Avenue, Bognor Regis, was arrested in Newtown Avenue, Bognor Regis, on 3 June, and charged with driving with 81mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system, driving with no licence, driving with no insurance, and aggravated vehicle taking and causing damage.

At Worthing Magistrates’ Court on 20 June, he was sentenced to a 12-month community order and disqualified from driving for 20 months. He was also ordered to pay a £110 fine, £85 costs and a £85 victim surcharge.

  • Martin Lineton, 40, a chef, of Broadfield Park, Brighton, was arrested in Tilgate Drive, Crawley, on 3 June, and charged with driving with 151mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system, driving with no insurance and driving with no licence.

At Crawley Magistrates’ Court on 20 June, he was sentenced to 18 weeks in jail suspended for 24 months, ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and was disqualified from driving for five years. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

The severity of his sentence was due to the seriousness of the offence and this being his second drink-driving conviction.

  • Blair Jarvis, 46, a designer, of Keysford Lane, Horsted Keynes, was arrested in Station Road, Horsted Keynes, on 4 June and charged with failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis.

At Crawley Magistrates’ Court on 19 June, he was disqualified from driving for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay a £120 fine, £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

  • Graham Jenkins, 33, a chef, of Rosemead Gardens, Crawley, was arrested in Commonwealth Drive, Crawley, on 4 June and charged with driving with 82mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system.

At Crawley Magistrates’ Court on 20 June, he was disqualified from driving for 22 months. He was also ordered to pay a £120 fine, £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

  • Laszio Eberhart, 50, unemployed, of Southdown Avenue, Hastings, was arrested in Fearon Road, Hastings, on 5 June and charged with failing to provide a specimen of urine for analysis.

At Hastings Magistrates’ Court on 21 June, he was disqualified from driving for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay a £120 fine, £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

  • Julie Shields, 53, a manager, of Edinburgh Road, Bexhill, was arrested in London Road, St Leonards, on 6 June and charged with driving with 105mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in her system.

At Hastings Magistrates’ Court on 21 June, she was disqualified from driving for 22 months. She was also ordered to pay a £270 fine, £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

  • Steven Joseph, 33, a removals operative, of Graham Avenue, Brighton, was arrested in Graham Avenue, Brighton, on 8 June and charged with driving with 65mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 22 June, he was disqualified from driving for 17 months. He was also ordered to pay a £120 fine, £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

  • Benjamin Manners, 21, a student, of The Brow, Brighton, was arrested in Bear Road, Brighton, on 8 June and charged with driving with 103mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 22 June, he was disqualified from driving for 23 months. He was also ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work, and pay £85 costs and a £85 victim surcharge.

  • Cezary Majczak, 42, a glass industry employee, of Seaford Road, Crawley, was arrested in Ifield Avenue, Crawley, on 9 June and charged with driving with 93mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system.

At Crawley Magistrates’ Court on 26 June, he was disqualified from driving for 23 months. He was also ordered to pay a £440 fine, £85 costs and a £44 victim surcharge.

  • Jacobo Ameijenda, 30, a chef, of Steyning Avenue, Peacehaven, was arrested in East Street, Brighton, on 10 June and charged with driving with 74mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system.

  • Lorraine Harvey, 50, unemployed, of Forest Rise, Crowborough, was arrested in Forest Rise, Crowborough, on 13 June and charged with driving with 63mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in her system.

  • Pinal Patel, 39, a Post Officer employee, of Beale Court, Crawley, was arrested in Turners Hill Road, Worth, on 18 June and charged with driving with 89mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system.

At Crawley Magistrates’ Court on 4 July, he was disqualified from driving for 22 months. He was also ordered to pay a £270 fine, £85 costs and a £27 victim surcharge.

  • Herman Kaarmann, 51, a packer, of Gratwicke Drive, Wick, was arrested in Aldwick Road, Bognor Regis, on 23 June, and charged with driving with 111mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system and driving with no licence.

At Crawley Magistrates’ Court on 26 June, he was disqualified from driving for 28 months. He was also ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work, and pay a £65 fine, £85 costs and a £85 victim surcharge.
