Lee Yates has been jailed for three years for controlling and abusing a woman in Crawley over several years.

Sussex Police received a report from a woman in her 40s that Yates had subjected her to a prolonged campaign of controlling behaviour.

He controlled many aspects of her life, including what clothes she wore, how long she could bathe and not allow her to fall asleep before him or stay in bed longer than him.

She was forced to make his meals and give him any of her spare money. Arguments were met with physical abuse and threats to kill her pets.

She also alleged Yates raped her on two occasions.

The incidents were reported to police and Yates was arrested while the victim was safeguarded and supported by specialist officers.

He was subsequently charged with coercive and controlling behaviour, and two counts of rape.

At Lewes Crown Court on Thursday, 2 April, he was found guilty of coercive and controlling behaviour, and not guilty of both counts of rape.

At the same court on Wednesday (15th April), he was jailed for three years.

Investigator Hannah Lane said: “Lee Yates sought to control almost every aspect of this victim’s life, using violence and intimidation to try and subdue her.

“But he underestimated her strength. Thanks to her reporting his crimes to the police, he is now safely behind bars while she can look to rebuild her life.

“Our message to any victims of coercive or controlling behaviour is that you are not alone and help is out there. Report it to the police, a friend, or any other source of support, and we will do all we can to protect you.”
