Retail Crime
Issued 12 May 2026
The Neighbourhood Policing Team continues to target persistent offenders and engage with partners and local businesses to offer support, conduct preventative work where appropriate and patrol areas of concern.
Our PCSOs visit local retailers offering advice on how to report retail crime which includes shoplifting and abuse towards staff and customers.
Additionally, we support Shop Kind campaigns throughout the year, raising public awareness on retail crime.
We continue to provide support to retailers on signing up to the retail crime reporting system DISC
Shoplifting remains to be a key and prominent issue that affects most shops nearly every single day. When in town, we always pay passing attention to the stores which seem to have the higher number of reports such as Tesco Express, TK Maxx, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. We will visit these specific stores whenever on shift and always speak to staff. From doing this, we can get an idea of the number of reported thefts they have had, who the offenders are, and when they have been happening.
