Sussex Police officer dismissed following sexual assault allegations

A Sussex Police officer has been dismissed without notice following allegations of sexual assault against another officer.

PC Daniel Julian was the subject of a misconduct hearing earlier this month which concluded on Monday 30 March that he had breached professional standards amounting to gross misconduct.

The officer, who was based on West Sussex division, was also placed on the College of Policing barred list prohibiting him from serving in policing in the future.

In 2021 an allegation of sexual assault was received; the officer was arrested and suspended from duty while an investigation was undertaken by the force. Charges were later authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service.

PC Julian was the subject of a criminal trial in 2024 regarding the alleged sex assault in the early hours of 17 August 2021, which he denied.  He was acquitted of three counts of sexual assault, causing a woman to engage in sexual activity without consent and attempted rape by a jury at Lewes Crown Court in April 2024.

The misconduct hearing heard that the alleged breaches of the standards of professional behaviour occurred in the early hours in a hotel in Kent, where he and the other officer were staying while on a police training course.

Detective Superintendent Andy Wolstenholme said: “This case centred on a victim who showed strength in the face of persistent, unwanted behaviour, and an officer who breached the trust of their colleague whilst away on a police training course.

"When supporting victims, we are clear that ‘no means no’, there is no ambiguity, and so when PC Julian tried to initiate an intimate encounter and was told ‘no’ repeatedly, it was clear that he knew that his behaviour was entirely inappropriate, yet he continued regardless.

"He has been dismissed as a result. We are unequivocable; misogyny and sexual misconduct have no place in Sussex Police, and any officer who fails to respect the boundaries, autonomy and voice of others will face decisive action."
